Using Dogs to Teach Psychology

Dr. Goodfriend partners with the TLC Animal Shelter at Newell, Iowa to use service learning in her "Learning and Memory" class. There, her students are able to apply the principles of "operant conditioning" — a type of learning where people and animals learn to associate certain behaviors with certain rewards or punishments — to a real situation.

Learning Resources

Whether you want to make sure you really understand a concept before your next big test, are tired of getting exams or essays back covered in red marks, or just want confirmation that you understand specific subject matter, academic tutors are here to help. They are friendly students and professors who love seeing the “Ah-Ha!” look of understanding on students’ faces when they grasp a concept that had been evading them. Now imagine an entire platoon of tutors available at your disposal. Like an academic army for your brain, this is the Center for Academic Excellence (CAE) .

The CAE is where good students go to get better. Based in the Information Technology Center Room 103, the CAE helps jack your grades to the start of the alphabet. Available free of charge, the CAE provides extra help for all subjects including writing, math, science, business, education classes and many others. Because everybody learns differently, each lab is equipped with expert tutors, who explain difficult concepts in unique and creative ways you will understand. Tutors are trained in learning strategies, study methods, social interaction, strategies for students with disabilities, and specific content area skills such as math methods and correctly citing sources to avoid plagiarism. Student tutors have been hand-picked because of their course aptitude and teaching ability, and each has experienced classes at BVU, making them conscious to what you’re going through.

Isn’t it time you feel that “Ah-Ha!” moment yourself?
